At Home Postnatal Care
The time at home with your new baby is magical but it can also be overwhelming, daunting and exhausting. Over 6 weeks of Postnatal Care, Lesley will ensure that both you and your baby are recovering well from the birth, that your baby is adapting as expected to their new life and help support you with your baby feeding plans. Lesley will also assess for any potential issues or clinical concerns that may crop up during your postpartum care period and support you all with tools or techniques to resolve them or, if needed, refer to a specialists for further investigations.
Postpartum care is intensive for the first few weeks as that is the time that most issues or concerns surface. The quicker that we can spot those issues, the quicker we can resolve them and hopefully, avoid them altogether. During the first week you would normally have an appointment with me every day. During the second week your would usually see me every other day, by weeks three and four you would normally see me twice a week and by week five and six, once per week.
There are routine tests that the NHS offer during postpartum care and I can undertake the majority of those at home, if you are having Postnatal Care at Home.
If you're having Supplemental Postnatal Care, your NHS midwife will carry out all clinical checks such as any physical checks you may need and the weight of your baby. I will ensure that your postnatal recovery is progressing as expected and that your baby is healthy and growing well, providing seamless, advice, information, education and support to supplement those appointments and refer you back to your primary care team if there are any concerns. We'll also explore concerns you and your partner may have around parenting styles, baby feeding, baby sleep and development.
Each appointment will last at least one hour with approximately 15 appointments over 6 weeks
There will be plenty of time for discussion during these appointments and times arranged to suit you and your partner's lifestyle.
You will normally see me 5 times in the first week of your baby’s birth, 3 times the following week and 1-2 times per week for the next 4 weeks, with each appointment lasting at least 1 hour. You’ll also have access to me outside of those appointments with any concerns you may have during your postnatal care period.
Your primary care provider, either NHS or private will organise or provide any tests that are needed however if I detect anything of concern I will update your primary care team and may also refer you for further investigations.
You partner is a vital part of this journey to parenthood and as such postnatal care appointments can also be managed around their schedule. There's also a dedicated course for partners to help them understand their role during pregnancy, birth and when baby comes home.
Once you've booked your postnatal care with me, you'll receive electronic guides and checklists throughout your care along with access to your own dedicated online folder.
